A Gamer’s Wrath

Recently I played a two games that illustrated exactly what I abhor about the state of today’s video game industry.

Now, in full disclosure, these were demos, not finished products. Still, that fact has no bearing on my experience. One of the games was Asura’s Wrath, a game that I had some mild interest in after seeing the ridiculous trailers that came out for it at last year’s E3. The other game was Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (which henceforth will be referred to as KoA:R), a game that I have been excited about for some time. Billing itself as a slightly more competent and less “experimental” version of the Fable series, it seemed like a game that was right down my alley. Now, while I could write in length about what I thought about each game and how they compared to one another in terms of presentation, gameplay, and story, that’s not what I’m here to talk about, so I’ll skip it. What I will tell you is that, after walking away from the two demos and letting my experiences tumble around in my head for a bit, I will no longer be purchasing KoA:R. But that’s getting ahead of myself. Read More…

Let’s Kill Hitler

Doctor Who returned to television last night, bringing us an episode hilariously named “Let’s Kill Hitler”. It was filled with revelations and new questions, and was definitely unexpected in the best ways. In this post I’ll be going into the events of the somewhat confusing episode, so if you’re avoiding spoilers you might want to avert your eyes. Read More…

How Harry Potter Went Out With A Fizz(l)ing Whizbee

In 1999 I graduated from elementary school, and spent the following summer dreading my upcoming year in 6th grade. Two years previously I had moved from North Dakota, land of praries and bison, to North Carolina, and it was as if I were in another world. I had changed much over those two years, morphing from the class clown to the reserved, shy Norwegian I am today, and was not looking forward to middle school in the slightest. I had heard many tales about how much more difficult school would be, and was wary of the change to moving classrooms when switching subjects. I remained afraid, right up until my birthday in July, when my grandmother gave me a book called Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Read More…

Why You Should See The Green Lantern

The Green Lantern came out today, and being the good comic book fan that I am, I went to the first showing I could. Mind you, I went as a comic book fan, not as a Green Lantern fan. I haven’t had the pleasure of reading the series, apart from a few of the comics from the Blackest Night event. However if you’re interested in the movie or the series behind it I suggest taking a look at this great primer from io9, which contains all of the information about the Green Lantern universe that I took with me into the film. The Top 10 of 2010

It’s nearing the end of December, so of course that means it’s time for another top of the year list. Everyone’s doing it, right? Anyway, introductions are unnecessary. Here are my top 10 favorite creative pursuits (that I was not directly involved in, of course) of the year. Read More…

Six Months Later

It’s been nearly six months since the final episode of Lost. Since then I’ve watched the series finale 23 times and have re-watched the first and second seasons of the show with a friend. In that time I have tried to come to grips with the show being over, but every time I end up watching the finale I cry at some point. This is odd, since it’s strange for me to cry when watching anything on TV, let alone something I’ve seen before. So when I re-watched the finale this week and found myself tearing up again, it got me thinking: Why does a show that people can dislike so much produce such an overwhelming emotional response in me? I came with a couple of answers, both of which I believe to be correct in some way. Read More…

3 New Fall Shows To Keep Your Eye On

Well, it’s the first day of fall, and you guys know what that means. No, I’m not talking about cooler weather, or trees shedding their leaves. I’m talking about the return of network television’s fall lineup of new shows already trying to hit that Nielsen sweet spot in an attempt to get picked up for another year. Here are three new series that are worth a look.
