Mass Effect 3 came out this week, one of the first big AAA gaming titles of 2012, and I got to start playing it last night. While I’m only 6 hours in, and nowhere near a point where I could give a thorough review of the game as a whole, I thought I’d post some of my initial thoughts about the game. Don’t worry, I don’t anticipate getting into anything spoiler-heavy, and if I do I’ll be putting up major warning signs all over the place before you get near anything that would ruin your experience with the game. Your Money and Your Mouth, Occupying The Same Space
“Hollywood is so unoriginal. I mean, come on, stop with the remakes and adaptations and sequels and make something new.”
We’ve all heard this complaint before, and it’s become increasingly popular today with websites reporting about cinema. I can’t say I don’t agree with it either. If you look a recent years you’ll see a multitude of unoriginal films, whether they’re comic book movies (Hollywood’s favorite blockbuster genre at the moment), sequels to films that were abominations to begin with, remakes of old classics that don’t need rehashing, or adaptations of that one anime/novel/obscure PBS soap opera (kidding, but not far from the truth). Movie Review: Chronicle
Part teenage drama, part superhero origin story, and a whole lot of impressive writing and visual effects, Chronicle is the latest in the recent long line of found footage films. However, through clever ideas and excellent execution, this film succeeds in breathing new life into a style of filmmaking that has become tired and frustrating. Read More…
A Gamer’s Wrath
Recently I played a two games that illustrated exactly what I abhor about the state of today’s video game industry.
Now, in full disclosure, these were demos, not finished products. Still, that fact has no bearing on my experience. One of the games was Asura’s Wrath, a game that I had some mild interest in after seeing the ridiculous trailers that came out for it at last year’s E3. The other game was Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (which henceforth will be referred to as KoA:R), a game that I have been excited about for some time. Billing itself as a slightly more competent and less “experimental” version of the Fable series, it seemed like a game that was right down my alley. Now, while I could write in length about what I thought about each game and how they compared to one another in terms of presentation, gameplay, and story, that’s not what I’m here to talk about, so I’ll skip it. What I will tell you is that, after walking away from the two demos and letting my experiences tumble around in my head for a bit, I will no longer be purchasing KoA:R. But that’s getting ahead of myself. Read More…
Let’s Kill Hitler
Doctor Who returned to television last night, bringing us an episode hilariously named “Let’s Kill Hitler”. It was filled with revelations and new questions, and was definitely unexpected in the best ways. In this post I’ll be going into the events of the somewhat confusing episode, so if you’re avoiding spoilers you might want to avert your eyes. Read More…
How Harry Potter Went Out With A Fizz(l)ing Whizbee
In 1999 I graduated from elementary school, and spent the following summer dreading my upcoming year in 6th grade. Two years previously I had moved from North Dakota, land of praries and bison, to North Carolina, and it was as if I were in another world. I had changed much over those two years, morphing from the class clown to the reserved, shy Norwegian I am today, and was not looking forward to middle school in the slightest. I had heard many tales about how much more difficult school would be, and was wary of the change to moving classrooms when switching subjects. I remained afraid, right up until my birthday in July, when my grandmother gave me a book called Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Read More…
Why You Should See The Green Lantern
The Green Lantern came out today, and being the good comic book fan that I am, I went to the first showing I could. Mind you, I went as a comic book fan, not as a Green Lantern fan. I haven’t had the pleasure of reading the series, apart from a few of the comics from the Blackest Night event. However if you’re interested in the movie or the series behind it I suggest taking a look at this great primer from io9, which contains all of the information about the Green Lantern universe that I took with me into the film.
